Mishnah and Gemara form the building blocks for future Torah study and mastery. Each demands important skills for comprehension and mastery.

Mishnah study requires the ability to recognize and understand the topics being studied and the prior knowledge critical for understanding the text. It also requires an understanding of the structure of Mishnayot, and the basic vocabulary necessary for comprehension of the text and its underlying ideas.

Gemara is an analysis of the Mishnah and the concepts that the Sages extracted from the text, as well as other texts. First and foremost, Gemara is in Aramaic, so vocabulary is critical. In addition, the Gemara is a series of logical arguments – so once a student understands the words of the Gemara, he or she must also be taught the Gemara’s logical arguments and conclusion – which often is implied, but not stated.

For both Mishnah and Gemara, each Kitah lesson teaches the concepts, text and explanation for the Mishnah in a clear, concise manner, and provides questions for student feedback to ensure comprehension of the basic words and ideas.

Kitah provides a comprehensive online Jewish learning program for parents looking to educate their Middle School (Grades 5-8) children at an affordable price. This plan combines two weekly online classes on two different topics but does not include a Zoom lesson. If there is sufficient demand, we will consider adding a Zoom lesson for this track.
